The word toile (pronounced “twall”) means “linen cloth” or “canvas” in French. The full and proper name of the cotton fabrics first produced in the late 18th century with scenes repeatedly scattered across them was “Toile de Jouy”, literally meaning “fabric from Jouy” – the town of Jouy-en-Josas outside of Paris.
As a tribute to both Tallahassee and Thomasville in the beautiful Red Hills region, we have designed toiles that showcase their iconic sites and scenes.
At The Hare & The Hart, we’ve produced several options for you to display your love for these towns beyond (but including) the traditional toile fabric: wallpaper, gift wrap, tote bags, mugs, phone cases (by custom order), and much, much more!
Our Toile Fabrics By-The-Yard
All of our original toile fabrics (plus our other fabric designs) are available for purchase by the yard! Each fabric purchase is done by custom order through Amy at the shop, either in person or over the phone (229.236.4278). You are able to select your fabric type, color, and repeat size. Fabric is $49.95 per yard, which is an upholstery-width yard (extra wide).
We then have your order custom printed by our fabric printer in North Carolina and usually have it within a week or two.
