Do you hurkle-durkle?

"The only difference between an extraordinary life and an ordinary one is the extraordinary pleasures you find in ordinary things."

I am curious to know: Do you hurkle-durkle?

Long before this term came into vogue and I even knew it was a pop culture concept, I embraced it ~ and you might have, too!

The phrase "hurkle-durkle" means to linger in bed past the point that it's time to get up. On the occasional day when you don't have to jump out of bed to be somewhere immediately, it's a lovely way to ease into the day.

It first appeared in John Jamieson’s Etymological Dictionary of the Scottish Language in 1808, a term originating in a dialect of Southern Scots. It was so obscure that until recently even many Scottish people doubted its authenticity!

I became aware of the term on Instagram and immediately related to it with fond memories of adolescence, luxuriating in a Saturday morning lie-in, reading and re-reading my Little House or Black Stallion books.

Katherine May, author of the book Wintering, says, “We don’t always get the opportunity, but lounging in bed is a lovely way to make a slow start to the day, rather than the hurried one we’re so used to. I know it has associations with being lazy and unproductive, but we all need to learn to value rest and recovery in our busy lives."

What do I like about a hurkle-durkle morning? For me, it's a great time to grab a cup of coffee, nestle in, and catch up on journaling, reading, and even doing the crossword (which is the main reason I subscribe to get the newspaper delivered - no digital puzzles for me!)

And, sometimes simply daydreaming is in order! Seriously, some of my most creative ideas for the business or for home projects come when my mind is free to wander within four cozy walls.

The freshness of morning, before the rush of the day and going out into the world, brings on clearer thoughts ~ or even out-of-the-box thinking that just doesn't happen at any other time!

If you are already an enthusiastic hurkle-durkler, I'd love to hear from you about your favorite things for a slow morning, so please hit "reply" and let me know!

There's just something different about time spent leisurely recharging before entering the day, isn't there? Enjoy!

xo,
