Picking a winner
“You know, you can dream big and you can you can pivot, you can come from one place and make yourself a part of history.” ― Cherie DeVaux, first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby
Did you witness history Saturday, May 2?
Even if you weren't watching the Kentucky Derby live, surely you've seen the footage of long shot Golden Tempo coming from dead last to win by a nose. The most exciting race in a long time!
But as beautiful as that winning moment was, the story of the people behind the amazing horse is just as compelling.
This victory made Cherie DeVaux the first female trainer to win the Run for the Roses.
And jockey Jose Ortiz orchestrated a ride dubbed a "masterclass" to edge out his brother Irad, becoming the first brothers to finish in the top two positions at the Kentucky Derby.

I see a Laura Hillenbrand - style book like Seabiscuit (don't forget the movie!) in the making, don't you?
I must say that I was thrilled, as I'd picked Golden Tempo to win! After watching his background story, I just knew. I had a feeling. And every once in a while, you just have to go with your gut!
And getting to celebrate that win in the historic barn at Greenwood, here in the Red Hills region, was special!
A fellow Annie Sloan stockist, who happens to live in Kentucky, commented on my Instagram reel depicting the gorgeous property and party, "Looks like y'all are doing Derby right!"
