The Dog Days of Summer

Oh, my goodness, the Dog Days of Summer are well and truly upon us ~ and it seems especially so, here in the Red Hills of south Georgia/north Florida!

As I type, a thunderstorm is booming and pouring, shaking our historic home's foundation and giving a (brief) reprieve from the stifling, muggy heat.

{Also, as I type, the Florence + the Machine song keeps looping through my head. Great song, but I hope this earworm leaves soon! And my apologies for putting it in your head if I did!}

So, while this phrase keeps popping up for me in the throes of July heat, I wonder: What exactly are the Dog Days of Summer?

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, "The term “Dog Days” traditionally refers to a period of particularly hot and humid weather occurring during the summer months of July and August in the Northern Hemisphere."

Sirius, the brightest star (besides the sun), rises at dawn during this period ~ and is called The Dog Star due to being in the constellation Canis Major.

In ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece there abounded myths and superstitions about this time of year.

But, at The Hare & The Hart, EVERY day is a Dog Day! As you may know, we are always excited to greet your furry companion in the shop!

We have our own four-legged friends at home and we know just how much you love yours. And FYI, downtown Thomasville is a very dog-friendly place to hang out!

One of our best canine customers is Carson, who graciously posed for us on his latest visit. Carson comes in about once a week to get lots of hugs from us.

His human told us, "Carson insists on visiting The Hare and The Hart whenever we're downtown! He pulls toward the store, even across the street. Lots of love in that place."

Our own sweet boy, Rugby, desperately needed a bath after boarding (and playing, playing, playing) during our recent travels. Of course, the kennel asked if we wanted them to bathe him, but I said we'd give him a scrub-down at home.

Um, why would I turn down a bath at the kennel?

Well, Rugglesby (one of his many nicknames) loves to use Sophie's Apawthecary shampoo at home. He seriously (or would that be Siriusly?) gets much softer and fluffier and better-smelling with their product than with any we've ever used.

Yes, I did say "fluffier" ~ as you probably know, he's a lab. And, hand-on-heart, Sophie's Apawthecary makes him velvety soft!
